I gave a talk, Silicon Valley tips for great presentations, as part of the Members Speaker Series at Green College, UBC , on September 17, 2007. Here's my handout from that presentation.Abstract: From the Green College Members Speaker Series, to conference talks, to teaching classes -- grad school is full of opportunities for you to give presentations. What are the practical tips that will help you do a great job of it? How do you make sure you have enough time, that your slides display right, that you can get to the next slide? Jim draws from his twenty years in high tech management and training to help you plan, produce, and perform your talks well. You already know your topic, you already know how to use your software, you already know the basics of public speaking -- this talk takes it from there, and ties it together. Come ready to share your own tips with other participants. This talk is for anyone who has presentations to give, wants to do them better, and wants to help others too. ![]() The talk was quite well attended, and the handouts I'd printed ran out quickly. I asked people to write their presentation disaster stories or tips on index cards, which I read out to everyone during the Q&A session. Many people shared very insightful tips of their own. I walked away with a fistful of improvements to the material. It looks like I'll have more chances to present this talk. One fellow Greenie asked me to speak at a departmental meeting, to help her fellow grad students get better at their presentations. A writer of children's fiction told me that writers like her frequently give presentations to kids, and would probably be interested in this talk. Let me know if you'd like me to present this to your group. |
